Using NewsFeeds (RSS)

The Red Rose forum uses RSS newsfeeds to keep you up-to-date. RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication" and means that you can subscribe to a section of the forum and be sent any updates or news items whenever they appear. There is no need to come to the forum every day to see if there is anything new. Your reader will tell you when we publish a new item and you can read just that article through the reader. or click on the link to bring you directly here.

There are a number of RSS newsreaders available for downloading over the Internet. Personally I have found the Google news reader to be the simplest and easiest to use. It is a new venture by Google, it is free and seems to work on all systems. You will need to set up a Google account, but this only requires your email address and a suitable password and is quick and easy.

To get a copy of the Google newsreader go to Google labs (either by going through the front page of Google, use the More >> tab and select the Labs link.  Or go directly there by typing http://labs.google.com/ in your browser and select the Google reader link in the left hand column. If you do not have a Google account you will need to set one up here. Once you have an account you need to find the "Labs" section and install Google reader.

Once you have the Google Reader installed you can start to add subscriptions to news feeds. The easiest way to do this is to copy and paste the web address (url) of the page that allows RSS subscriptions. We have two at present (more will be added soon). The urls for these two are

http://redrose.squarespace.com/journal/

http://redrose.squarespace.com/europe-journal/

Now whenever you open Google Newsreader you will see if we have added anything new. - marvelous !!!

There are lots of other RSS newsfeeds that you can subscribe to if you want such as BBC, NewYork Times, CNN, Guardian and a plethora of non-news feeds - don't get too involved - life is too short !
