Machines, Markets and models: new discussion pamphlet on the politics of a democratic NHS to be published shortly
Compass will soon be publishing a new pamphlet on the politics of the NHS by Neal Lawson. The central argument is that the NHS should be valued not just for its instrumental value (it makes people better) but its intrinsic value as a socializing institution. But there is a paradox at the heart of the NHS. In today’s world the modern left want diversity and local decision making which inevitably leads to different outcomes but also universalism and equality of service. The two are in conflict. The pamphlet argues that neither top down centralisation nor the commercialisation of the NHS can help manage this paradox. Instead we have to find ways of binding producers and users of NHS services into the management of this paradox so that they inform the decisions, to balance our conflicting desire for diversity and our belief in equity. - Join to receieve your priority copy
